Match, series, pride — all gone at Oval
India lose fifth Test against England by an innings and 244 runs after being bundled out for 94

London, August 17
Right over the brink the Indian batsmen went, drawn to and over the edge by a strong impulse of self-destruction, and lost the fifth Test match against England by an innings and 244 runs, and the series 1-3.

After England had been bowled out for 486 in their first innings, India were faced with a massive challenge to save the match. They had to overturn a lead of 338 runs, and then set up England a big target to chase. That would not have happened, of course - India's four previous innings had been worth 178, 152, 161 and 148, for an average of 160 an innings. Even 160 would have been an achievement in their last Test innings of this tour, so sorry has been their batting, so complete their mental disintegration.

That's how it was today. James Anderson and Stuart Broad troubled the Indians under a dark pre-lunch sky, and wickets fell in a torrent before and after the break. Only three of the 11 batsmen managed to reach double figures, and the innings lasted just 29.2 overs.
