New Delhi, July 11
The Centre today informed Parliament that none of the 11,100 files destroyed by the Union Home Ministry recently related to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, emphasising that 52 files and 67 exhibits pertaining to it are in the safe custody of National Archives.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh was responding to the issue in the Rajya Sabha raised earlier by P Rajeev (CPM) citing media reports that 1.5 lakh files, including those relating to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, Governor General Lord Mountbatten, the first President Rajinder Prasad and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, were destroyed during the clean-up drive.

“I would like to inform the august House that none of the 11,100 files so destroyed relate to Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. This is also to inform that none of the files so destroyed related to either Dr Rajendra Prasad, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri or Lord Mountbatten as alleged by the Hon’ble MP”, the home minister said adding that 52 files and 67 sets of exhibits containing 11,186 pages relating to Mahatma Gandhi assassination are in the safe custody of the National Archives.
