SC gets 3 new judges

New Delhi, July 7
Justices Arun Mishra, Adarsh Kumar Goel and Rohinton Nariman today assumed office as Supreme Court judges, taking the number of judges to 27 against the sanctioned strength of 31, including the Chief Justice of India.

Justice Goel has been the Chief Justice (CJ) of the Orissa High Court, while Justice Mishra was the CJ of the Calcutta HC. Justice Nariman has been the Solicitor General and was only the fifth senior advocate to be straightaway appointed a judge of the SC. The earlier such appointees were Justices SM Sikri in 1964 (who retired as the CJI in 1973), RC Roy in 1971who died in four months, Kuldip Singh (1988-96) and Santosh Hegde (1999-2005).

CJI RM Lodha administered the oath of office to the three, following which they sat on Benches and heard cases listed for the day.
