Jalandhar, July 5
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal made a U-turn today after ordering an inquiry against SAD’s Phillaur legislator and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Avinash Chander in the synthetic drug racket case.

Badal said there was no need for another inquiry in the case since Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police Hardyal Singh Mann was already conducting a probe.

He was talking to mediapersons during a visit to a de-addiction centre in Jalandhar. On government’s failure to act against the Phillaur MLA in spite of his name figuring in the multi-crore rupee drug racket, the Chief Minister asked the director of newly formed Punjab Narcotics Control Bureau, Ishwar Singh, to probe the SAD MLA’s role in the case. But minutes later, he told mediapersons that since a probe was already on in the case, there was no need for another inquiry.

The Phillaur MLA

  • Avinash Chander is an SAD legislator from Phillaur and is the Chief Parliamentary Secretary in the Punjab Government
  • His name had figured in the synthetic drug racket after some financial transactions against his name were found in documents seized from a key accused
