A newly married woman and her lover today allegedly committed suicide at Nindana village of Rohtak district.

Though the preliminary investigations indicate that the two had committed suicide, the possibility of honour killing cannot be ruled out, sources in the police said.

The man was found hanging from a tree, while the woman, who had multiple stab wounds, was lying about 250 metre away in agricultural fields. A bottle of Celphos tablets was also recovered from the scene of the crime.

The village sarpanch informed the police, following which a case was registered and bodies were sent for post-mortem.

Sources said Manisha (23), daughter of one Suresh of Nindana village, allegedly had a love affair with Sanjay, son of one Rajender of the same village. Sanjay, a folk singer, belonged to the Jat community, while Manisha belonged to a Dalit family.

However, Manisha’s parents married her off to one Sonu of Bhana Khera village in Jind district on June 23 and she had come to Nindana village yesterday to meet her family.

Manisha’s family members realised that she was not at home when they woke up today morning. Police investigations later revealed that Sanjay and Manisha had talked to each other on phone around 1 am.

Rohtak SSP Saurabh Singh said a case had been registered and investigations were on. He said Meham DSP Mukesh Jakhar and local SHO Narender Pal had visited the spot with a forensic team.

Jakhar said prima facie it seemed to be a suicide case, but a conclusion could only be drawn after the post-mortem.

Manisha’s father Suresh and Sanjay’s brother Manjeet maintained that they had no clue about the reasons behind the deaths and were not aware of the alleged affair.
