Modi to open Uri-II project tomorrow Srinagar, July 2 Work on the Uri-II project began in 2005. Pakistan initially objected to the project alleging that it was in violation of the Indus Water Treaty. However, Pakistan later relented. All arrangements have been made for inauguration of the 240 MW power project located at Kalgai Salamabad village, 125 km from here. Uri-II hydroelectric power project is a run-of-the-river project and has come up at a cost of nearly Rs 1,800 crores. Though the power project was to be inaugurated by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last year, the plan had to be shelved as the project was not fully ready and the tunnel had leakages at several places. “Once the Uri-II project is commissioned, the power corporation would increase its hydropower generation capacity to 2009 MW,” said an official. He said the project would generate 1,123 million
units of energy annually from its four 60 MW generating units.
