I want to say very clearly that the government has the highest respect for the institutions of the Judiciary, including the SC. The government is very much committed to the concept of independence of the Judiciary. It has, and will have at all times to come, the highest regard for the Chief Justice of India

BJP playing politics of vengeance: Cong
The Congress on Wednesday accused the BJP of playing the politics of vengeance. Party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said: “Arun Jaitley had written to the former PM Manmohan Singh protesting Subramaniam’s appointment as amicus curiae in a case related to Godhra riots. The government has now achieved its vengeance.”

New Delhi, July 2
Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi today sought to end the chasm between the government and the Judiciary, a day after Chief Justice of India RM Lodha vented out his ire over the rejection of Supreme Court collegium’s proposal for the appointment of senior advocate Gopal Subramanium as a judge of the SC.

“I want to say very clearly and categorically that the government has the highest respect for the institutions of the Judiciary, including the SC. The government is very much committed to the concept of independence of the Judiciary,” Prasad told the media.

There was no denying the fact that independence of the judiciary was crucial for any democracy, the minister said when asked about the CJI’s remarks that the government had unilaterally segregated the proposal relating to Subramanium from the file containing the names of four persons to be appointed as SC judges. The CJI had taken exception to the government’s “casual” approach on such a serious constitutional issue.
