Chandigarh, June 29
Punjab Police today claimed to have busted an international drug smuggling racket involving Pakistan, Burundi and Indian nationals. Six persons, all Punjabis, have been arrested and 27 kg of heroin recovered from them.

The contact with the smugglers was made through two convicts, one of them a Burundi national who is behind bars in the Burail Jail here in a drug smuggling case.

They smuggled drugs, especially heroin, from Lahore to Jaisalmer in Rajasthan via Punjab, which was sold in the international market through Burundi nationals, the police claimed.

ADGP (Law and Order) Dinkar Gupta said the racket was busted after a 10-day operation. One of the kingpins of the racket – Amandeep Singh of Kot Dharam Chand in Tarn Taran — was arrested and 11 kg heroin was seized from him. Also, one Alto vehicle and a mobile with Pakistani SIM card were recovered. Gupta said taking the investigation forward, the Tarn Taran police today intercepted near Kapurthala Chowk, Goindwal Sahib, top smugglers Hardeep Singh, alias Perry, of New Partap Nagar, Amritsar; Heera Singh of Muradpura, Tarn Taran; Gurbinder Singh, alias Binder, of Mallian,Tarn Taran; Buta Singh of Dholan,Tarn Taran. He said the four smugglers were travelling in a Duster and a Bolero, which have been seized. Sixteeen kilogram heroin and one Chinese .30 pistol were seized from them.

He said investigations have revealed that the seized heroin (27 kg) originated from two Lahore-based smugglers — ‘Kalu Chairman’ and ‘Nasir’. The heroin was pushed across the border from Muzzafarabad (J&K) and headed to Jaisalmer to be delivered to one smuggler ‘Kheru’, a resident of Jaisalmer, and his associates based in Rajasthan.

Giving details about the smugglers’ links with the Burail Jail, he said Hardeep Singh’s father, Paramjit Singh, was a convict in a narcotics case and lodged in the Burail Jail, Chandigarh. Along with Paramjit Singh, one Festus Benson, a Burundi national, was also undergoing sentence in the same case. Hardeep Singh, alias Perry, used to meet Paramjit and the Burundi national in the jail. Through them, his contact was established with one Samuan, a Burundi national) and relative of Festus.

Samuan was in India earlier, but had gone back to Burundi three months ago. He added Parkash Singh Bhatia, alias Sunny, a resident of Katra Jaimal Singh, Amritsar, was arrested today. He was the Hawala dealer for the smugglers.
