No move to impose Hindi: Centre tells states
Tribune News Service

Non Hindi-speaking states spared
The Home Ministry's language department in a circular had asked all ministries and departments, PSUs and banks to give prominence to Hindi on the social media
TN CM J Jayalalithaa, DMK chief M Karunanidhi and MDMK chief Vaiko criticised the move; J-K CM Omar Abdullah said his government will communicate only in English and Urdu
The government on Friday clarified that the communication was not meant for non Hindi-speaking states

New Delhi, June 20
Under attack for its move advocating use of Hindi across social media platforms and in official work, the Centre today sought to put the controversy of attempts to impose the language to rest clarifying the latest communication is applicable only to Hindi-speaking states.

After parties in Tamil Nadu raised the red flag expressing concern over the May 27 circular of the Home Ministry, the government clarified the circular was a reiteration of earlier communication and does not seek to impose communication in Hindi on states which are not Hindi-speaking.

The government's clarification came after Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalithaa wrote to PM Modi describing the suggestion as against “the letter and spirit” of the Official Languages Act. She said it caused “disquiet” to the people of Tamil Nadu who are proud and passionate about their linguistic heritage.
