Cabinet expansion likely in July

New Delhi, May 29
BJP allies who despite registering big wins were allocated only one Cabinet post in the Narendra Modi government will get extra portfolios in the Cabinet expansion, expected around Budget/Monsoon session in July.

The "performance-based" expansion, which may see the existing Council of Ministers (with 45 members) being augmented with another 20 to 25 members, may also accommodate some sulking MPs, especially from states such as Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The West Bengal unit of the BJP, which managed to secure two seats despite a "Mamata Banerjee wave in the state", is also upset over Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra getting the lion's share in the Modi government. Good news for in-house hopefuls, according to sources, is that Modi would allocate new portfolios after assessing the performance of MPs in the Parliament session. As far as allies are concerned, Modi has allocated only one Cabinet berth to Shiv Sena (18 MPs), TDP (16 MPs), LJP (six MPs) and Akali Dal (four MPs). Another Bihar ally Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (three seats) got one MoS.

The move saw Shiv Sena going open with its protest. Though the TDP did not voice its discontent openly, it has issues. TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu is expected to meet Modi tomorrow to discuss his wish list. LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan is also eyeing an extra portfolio for his son Chirag. Apparently, Rajya Sabha MP Ramdas Athavale, who heads the RPI-Athavale group, is also unhappy and so is PMK-the Tamil Nadu ally which managed one seat despite J Jayalalithaa storm in the state.

Within the party, MPs who delivered 100 per cent are upset. In Rajasthan, the BJP swept the polls by claiming all 25 Lok Sabha seats but was given only one portfolio - Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers to Nihal Chand.

The Rajput community is miffed over their "non-representation" in the Council of Ministers. Though reports suggest that CM Vasundhara Raje was upset over "weak" representation to Rajasthan, sources say that her insistence that son Dushyant Singh, Jhalawar MP, be accommodated in the Council of Ministers.
