LeT behind Herat attack, Karzai tells Modi

New Delhi, May 27
Afghan President Hamid Karzai is learnt to have told New Delhi that the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was behind the terror attack on the Indian Consulate at Herat last week.

This, he said, had been confirmed to him by a western intelligence agency. He lauded Indian and Afghan security personnel who repulsed the attack in which the diplomatic staff escaped unhurt while four terrorists were killed.

Karzai had a nearly half an hour meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi this morning, Later, he also had a meeting with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Lashkar denies

Srinagar: Militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) has denied that it was involved in the attack on the Indian diplomatic mission in Afghanistan last week.

"Karzai's claim is not based on truth. We condemn the attack," a man identifying himself as LeT spokesperson Abdullah Ghaznavi said in a call to the AFP's office in Srinagar on Tuesday at around 2 pm. The spokesperson said the outfit was carrying out its operation in Jammu and Kashmir only.

During his meeting with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Prime Minister said India valued relationship with Lanka and asked him to expedite the process of national reconciliation which meets the aspirations of the Tamil population.

US hails Modi-Sharif meet

Washington: The US today applauded the first bilateral meeting between Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif, adding it welcomes any steps by the two South Asian neighbours to strengthen their dialogue. “We continue to welcome any and all steps India and Pakistan take to strengthen and deepen their dialogue and cooperation, and we applaud any efforts between the two countries to create economic opportunities for their people,” said State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki. — PTI
