Jind, May 9
Eleven persons, including five inspectors (two retired) and a head constable, were today booked for abetting the suicide of a 35-year-old woman in Dhanauri village of Jind district. The police registered the case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code after the victim’s relatives refused to hand over the body to them without bringing the accused to book.

The victim, who was staying with her brother after an unsuccessful marriage, reportedly consumed poison at her house and left a suicide note, holding the 11 people responsible for her death.

In April 2013, three men had allegedly barged into the victim’s house when she was alone and sexually assaulted her. She was reportedly rescued by her neighbours who rushed to her house after hearing her shrieks.

“She has committed suicide only because of the inefficiency of cops who failed to do justice to her despite her repeated requests for strict action against the accused,” alleged Shamsher Singh, the victim’s brother.

After the victim approached the police, a case under Section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC was registered on April 21, 2013, but no action was taken against the accused, who allegedly kept threatening the victim.

After approaching all senior officials of the Haryana police, she staged a dharna in front of the DGP’s house, but to no avail. Narwana Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Puran Chand said: “We have registered a case against 11 persons.”
