Crucial day as 117 seats in11 states, UT go to polls today
Phase 6: 2,076 candidates in fray * Sushma, Mulayam’s fate to be sealed

A total of 117 constituencies across 11 states and the union territory of Puducherry will go to votes tomorrow in which over 18 crore voters will cast their votes in what will be the sixth of the nine-phase elections. A total of 2,076 candidates are in the fray.

The electoral fate of several biggies will be sealed. These will include Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s Mehbooba Mufti, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and his daughter-in-law Dimple Yadav, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, cricketer Mohd Azharuddin, actress Hema Malini, former Union Home Secretary RK Singh, former Chief Minister of Jharkhand Shibu Soren, President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit, Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s son Karti, Union Minister Charan Das Mahant and former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s niece Karuna Shukla.

In Tamil Nadu, an accused in the 2-G Spectrum allocation scam A Raja will see his fate sealed along with that of Dayanidhi Maran, DMK leader T R Baalu and MDMK leader Vaiko. In the adjoining Puducherry Union Minister V Narayanasamy is contesting. In Mumbai Union Minister Milind Deora, Priya Dutt, Gurudas Kamath along with AAP candidates Medha Patkar and Meera Sanyal will see their fate sealed.

In Bihar, BJP’s Shahnawaz Hussain, party’s lone Muslim face in the outgoing Lok Sabha, NCP general secretary Tariq Anwar, former Union Minister and RJD leader Mohd Taslimuddin are among those in the fray.

In Jammu and Kashmir, polling will be held in Anantnag Lok Sabha seat in the backdrop of the killing of four political workers. As many as 12 candidates, including NC’s Mehboob Beg and sitting MP and opposition PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, are in the fray in the constituency in which over 12 lakh voters are eligible to vote.

In Chhattisgarh, polling will be held in the remaining seven of the 11 seats.

Aiming to overcome the challenge of key state parties the DMK and the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, the BJP has forged a rainbow coalition of six parties. All the 39 constituencies in the state and the lone seat in Puducherry will complete voting on a single day. In Maharashtra polling will be held on 19 seats, including six in Mumbai, all of them held by the Congress and its ally NCP. In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, polling will be held on 12 seats and seven seats, respectively.

All Anantnag polling stations hyper-sensitive

All 1,615 polling stations in Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency in J-K have been declared “hyper-sensitive” following terror strikes on Monday. Fifteen battalions of the CRPF, 7,500 personnel of the state armed police and all police forces posted in the four districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam and Shopian have been placed at the disposal of election authorities. Ten battalions of the Rashtriya Rifles are also ready to thwart any attempt by separatists to disrupt the polls. P8

PM, wife to cast vote

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has been representing Assam in the Rajya Sabha since 1991, and his wife Gursharan Kaur are scheduled to cast their votes at Dispur Government Higher Secondary School in Assam.
