Modi file nomination papers for Varanasi seat
Varanasi: BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Thursday filed his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi constituency, saying he had been called by “Mother Ganga” to contest from this holy city.
He filed the papers after conducting a road show in the city.
Among those who proposed his nomination were Madan Mohan Malaviya’s grandson Giridhar Malaviya, Padma Vibhushan awardee Chhandu Lal Mishra, boatman Virbhadra Nishad and Ashok, a member of the dominant weaver community.
Talking to reporters before filing his papers, Modi said he felt that “Mother Ganges” has called him to contest from this constituency,
”... Earlier I used to think that the BJP has sent me here, sometimes I felt that I am going to Kashi. But after coming here, I feel neither has anybody sent me nor have I come on my own. It is Mother Ganga who has called me.
“And the way a child feels when he is back in his mother’s lap, the same way I feel here,” said the Gujarat Chief Minister who is also contesting from Vadodara in his home State.
He vowed to make Kashi a spiritual capital of the world.
“God... give me strength, so that I can work for the city, for my poor weaver brothers...so that Kashi can become a spiritual capital of the world,” Modi said.
The BJP leader sought to project common links between his birthplace in Vadnagar in Gujarat and Varanasi, saying both were pilgrim centres for worshippers of Lord Shiva. — PTI
Cong demands FIR against Modi for model code
'violation'
NEW DELHI: The Congress demanded registration of an FIR against BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for “flagrant violation” of the model code by telecasting his roadshow and filing of nomination in Varanasi in the 117 constituencies going to the polls on Thursday.
“We do not want just issuing of notice. We want action. FIR should be registered against all BJP leaders involved, including the candidate from Varanasi,” party spokesman and Union Minister Anand Sharma told reporters here.
Insisting that the telecast of Modi’s roadshow and his filing of nomination has “gravely violated” the model code, Sharma alleged that this was done as part of a
“well-planned” scheme of BJP to influence the voters in the constituencies going to the polls on Thursday.
He said the law was very clear that there cannot be canvassing on the polling day.
Noting that the BJP programme was an elaborate affair and the telecast took place from 8 am till 3 pm, Sharma wondered as to “why the EC was not alert” and why the media was not told against telecasting it in the constituencies having polling on Thursday.
Claiming that the development was “without precedent”, he said what has happened was
"unacceptable".
Sharma downplayed a question when pointed out that there was polling in Tripura when Rahul Gandhi had filed his nomination in Amethi which was shown live all over the country. He said that on Thursday, the constituencies involved were 117, the second largest number of seats having polling in a single day in the
nine-phase elections.
“We expect the EC to take appropriate action. It is a very flagrant violation of the Represention of People Act,” he said in reply to a question.
“We will wait for the response of the EC,” Sharma said when asked whether the party will demand a repoll in all the 117 constituencies.
Asked whether the Congress planned to approach the President on the issue, he merely said, “Let us take one step at a time.”
The 117 constituencies cover 11 states and the Union Territory of Puducherry in the sixth phase of Lok Sabha
election. The fate of 2076 candidates will be decided by 18 crore voters in the polls in which the stakes are high for the Congress, BJP and number of other parties like AIADMK, DMK, NCP and Shiv Sena. — PTI

Will not take immediate decision on Lokpal, Centre tells SC
NEW DELHI: The Centre on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that it will not take any immediate decision on the appointment of chairperson and members of the Lokpal, virtually indicating that the decision in this regard might be left to the new government after the general elections.
Appearing before a bench headed by Justice R M Lodha, Solicitor General Mohan Parasaran said the government is not planning to take any decision on the appointment of Lokpal after which the apex court posted the case for hearing on May 5.
The bench said there was no need for any interim order on a PIL challenging the selection procedure for the Lokpal after the government assured the court that no decision will be taken till May 5.
The bench was hearing a plea filed by NGO Common Cause seeking a stay on the entire selection process of appointment of chairperson and members of the Lokpal, saying the government was going ahead with it despite the apex court being seized of the issue.
“It is submitted that the latest move by the government to proceed with the appointment of the chairperson and members of the Lokpal, even while this court is seized of the issue of the validity of the rules framed under the Lokpal Act, is not only highly improper but also illegal and arbitrary,” the application has said.
The NGO has filed the fresh plea following apex court’s oral observation during an earlier hearing in which the bench had said if it comes across any such development (by the government so far as the selection of the Lokpal and its members was concerned), it would be at liberty to approach this court for interim directions.
The NGO’s plea, filed through advocate Prashant Bhushan, has sought to declare “illegal” the rules under which selections are being done.

Giriraj Singh
files anticipatory bail plea
PATNA: Facing imminent arrest for his alleged hate speech, BJP leader Giriraj Singh on Thursday applied for anticipatory bail in the district court here hours after a joint team of Bihar and Jharkhand police raided his house to arrest him.
He filed the anticipatory bail plea in the court of district judge Virendra Kumar who listed the matter for hearing on Friday.
Singh has sought anticipatory bail in connection with an FIR lodged against him at the Airport police station here on April 21 under provisions of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1950 and Indian Penal Code(IPC).
The FIR against him was lodged by a district officer on the direction of the Election Commission which had taken note of his statement defending his controversial remarks in Jharkhand that those who opposed Narendra Modi should go to Pakistan.
Singh, a former minister in the Nitish Kumar government, had made the controversial remark during an election meeting in Jharkhand’s Deoghar district on April 19.
He had also said that the Centre was giving subsidy for export of beef while taxing those who reared cows.
Two FIRs were lodged against him at Deogarh and Bokaro in Jharkhand for the comments and the one in Patna at the behest of the Election Commission, which barred him from campaigning in the two states.
The BJP leader had on Wednesday said he will surrender before a court either in Bihar or in Jharkhand on Thursday. — PTI
