EC orders FIRs against Amit Shah, Azam Khan for hate speeches
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 11
Coming down heavily on BJP leader Amit Shah and Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan for allegedly making communally polarising speeches, the Election Commission today barred them from addressing rallies in Uttar Pradesh.

The EC has asked the UP Government to register FIRs against them. The District Magistrates have been advised to use their powers under Sections 107, 108, 109, 110 and 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) to keep both leaders under check. The legal provisions listed by the EC could lead to arrest of Khan and Shah, if they don’t mend their ways.

Passing the orders under Article 324 of the Constitution, the EC this evening told the UP Chief Secretary that “necessary FIRs should be immediately filed and criminal proceedings initiated against the two leaders”.

It issued specific instructions debarring them from addressing rallies or making speeches. The Chief Secretary has been told that “no permission should be granted for holding any public meeting, procession, rally or road show in which these two leaders are expected or likely to participate”. A PTI report said the BJP has urged the EC to review its decision on Amit Shah.
