New Delhi, March 27
The Supreme Court today suggested the appointment of Sunil Gavaskar as interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in place of N Srinivasan. It further proposed the suspension of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) led by Team India captain MS Dhoni and Rajasthan Royals from the Indian Premier League (IPL), pending disposal of the betting and spot-fixing case.
A Bench of Justices AK Patnaik and FMI Kalifullah also proposed the suspension of BCCI office-bearers who were also officials of India Cements, a company of Srinivasan that owned CSK.
The Bench asked BCCI’s senior counsel Aryaman Sundaram to consider the proposals and give the Board’s response tomorrow.
In his immediate response, Sundaram said the IPL format would go for a six if Chennai and the Royals were suspended. Further, there would be a problem keeping them out of IPL 7, which starts April 16, without following the rules of the IPL and the BCCI.
The Bench came out with its suggestion after hearing the arguments of the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) that pleaded for stern action on the basis of the findings of an SC-appointed panel that probed the fixing and betting allegations. The apex court said it would pass its interim order tomorrow after hearing BCCI’s response to its proposals.
