Kejriwal attacked,
AAP activists assault attacker
Bhiwani (Haryana): Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal was today
attacked and hit on neck by an unidentified man who has been assaulted
by his party activists during his campaigning at Charkhi Dadri area in
Haryana.
Kejriwal, who is on a campaign trail in Haryana, said he was "hit
hard" on his neck.
"Someone hit me hard on my neck just now. This kind of violent
reaction is expected of them. It only shows their true character and
desperation," the former Delhi Chief Minister said.
AAP volunteers then hit back and assaulted the attacker.
"Our supporters beat him up in retaliation. That is very wrong.
That is not expected of us," Kejriwal said in a tweet.
"I am deeply hurt by the reaction of our supporters. If we also
react violently, then what is the difference between them and us?,"
he said.
Asking his supporters not to indulge in violence, Kejriwal said AAP's
movement will be "finished" if his supporters retaliate to
such attacks.
"If we ever become violent, the movement would be finished. So,
please please please, in future, if anyone hits us, including me, we
should be nice to him," he said in an appeal to AAP supporters.
Kejriwal kicked off a three-day roadshow in Haryana from Dhansa earlier
in the day. PTI
India successfully tests Prithvi II missile
BHUBANESWAR: India successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Prithvi-II surface-to-surface missile from a military base in Odisha on Friday, a senior official said.
The indigenously-developed ballistic missile with a maximum range of 350 km was fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in Balasore district, about 230 km from Bhubaneswar.
“It was a perfect launch. It met all mission objectives,” test range Director M.V.K.V. Prasad told IANS.
The Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army conducted the test as part of a regular training exercise, he said.
Prithvi is India’s first indigenously-built ballistic missile. It is one of the five missiles being developed under the country’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme.
The battlefield missile, with flight duration of 483 seconds and a peak altitude of 43.5 km, can carry a 500-kg warhead.
The missile has features to deceive anti-ballistic missiles and uses an advanced inertial guidance system with
manoeuvring capabilities and reaches its target within a few metres of accuracy.
It has a higher lethal effect compared to equivalent missiles in the world. Scientists say the accuracy has already been demonstrated in the past in the development flight trials.- IANS
BCCI says SC interim order is acceptable
NEW DELHI: The BCCI today welcomed the Supreme Court's decision not to suspend the Chennai Super Kings and Rajesthan Royals from the IPL and said the order to make Sunil Gavaskar interim president was "acceptable" to the Board.
The Supreme Court today ordered that Gavaskar should be made the interim president for managing affairs of
IPL, while the senior most vice-president -- Shivlal Yadav -- should take care of the
non-IPL affairs of the BCCI.
Hailing the Supreme Court's decision not to suspend Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals from playing in IPL 7, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla said the order was in the best interest of the game and cricket fans.
"We have no objection to the Supreme Court order. The BCCI lawyers have also said that the order is acceptable. Even Srinivasan had said through the lawyers that he is willing to step aside and after that what court decides will be acceptable to him," Shukla said.
"The good thing is that all eight teams will play in this year's IPL. IPL will go on and there will be no hindrance." Senior counsel Harish Salve had yesterday accused Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni of being "guilty of corrupt practice" by lying before the Mudgal Committee on the role of the Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan in CSK.
But the BCCI today defended Dhoni in the court and said he has been wrongly vilified by media after yesterday's proceedings.
"It was not wise to drag Dhoni is this matter. He has nothing to do with it," Shukla said.
Shivlal Yadav, who will look after all non-IPL affairs of the BCCI, has vowed to give his best.
"I am quite happy to hear the news that I will be looking after cricket affairs after the
IPL. I will try to do my best," he said. - PTI
Gavaskar to head BCCI during IPL 7 season
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today handed over the reins of BCCI to former player Sunil Gavaskar during IPL 7 and did not bar Srinivasan-promoted Chennai Superkings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) from participating in the tournament.
Taking the cricket board out of incumbent Srinivasan's hands, the Court directed that the senior most vice president of the Board, Shivlal Yadav, will be looking after the affairs of BCCI.
A bench of justices A K Patnaik and F M Ibrahim Kalifulla, which had yesterday proposed barring CSK and RR in the tournament, however, refused to pass order in this regard allowing them to play the matches along with six other teams in the tournament beginning April 16 in Dubai.
The bench also said that Gavaskar will have to get out of the contract with BCCI for commentary in order to discharge the duty assigned by the court. It also directed BCCI to adequately compensate the veteran cricketer.
The order was given during hearing on the Mudgal Committee report that went into betting and spot-fixing allegations against those involved in CSK and RR during IPL 6.
In a packed-courtroom, the bench made it clear that no employee of India Cements, except players and commentators, will be allowed to get involved in any duties or activities of BCCI.
It also said that it is for Gavaskar to decide whether the present Chief Executive Officer of IPL, Sundar Raman, to continue on his post or to be replaced after allegations were levelled against him in the court of protecting Srinivasan.
In the meantime, BCCI pleaded with the court to allow Srinivasan to hold the post of International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman from July. But the bench refused to pass any order regarding this.
The BCCI also vehemently rejected the allegations levelled against Indian cricket team captain M S Dhoni by counsel Harish Salve, who accused him of "covering up" Gurunath Meiyappan.
"He has been wrongly vilified by media after false allegations were leveled against him in the court yesterday.
He never made a statement that Meiyappan was just a cricket enthusiast as submitted by senior counsel Harish Salve," senior advocate C A Sundaram, appearing for BCCI, told the bench.
"The Statement made yesterday was false," he further said.- PTI
Credit card cloning gang busted, five held
CHENNAI: A five member gang involved in stealing credit and debit card data and producing cloned ones to swindle money from accounts of card holders was arrested here today, police said.
Three laptops, 12 Electronic Data Capture (EDC) machines, 40 debit and credit cards, encoder gadgets, mobile phones and Rs 1.40 lakh in cash were seized from the accused. Fake bank and government documents were also seized from one of them.
Police said an employee of a retail outlet at a mall here copied credit and debit data of customers stealthily while billing them and passed on the data to two other gang members, who made fake cards, incorporated customers' data in it and used them to withdraw money.
A complaint was lodged by HDFC Bank that fraudulent financial transactions had taken place in the accounts of many of its customers even while they had physical custody of debit cards.
The bank suspected that the card data could have been stolen in a particular shop in the mall as fraudulent dealings were detected only after the customers visited that particular shop.
The bank fraud prevention team of Central Crime branch conducted investigations and apprehended the accused. PTI
Birbhum gangrape: SC asks WB govt to pay Rs 5 lakh to victim
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court today directed the West Bengal government to pay Rs five lakh compensation in addition to already sanctioned Rs 50,000 to the 20-year-old Birbhum gangrape victim.
A bench of Chief Justice P Sathasivam, S A Bobde and N V Ramana also said the state government has failed to protect the fundamental right of the victim, a young tribal woman who was gangraped allegedly by 13 villagers in Birbhum district in January this year.
The bench said all states are duty bound to protect the rights of women and that they have freedom of choice in marriage.
On January 31, the apex court had directed the West Bengal Chief Secretary to respond on what action police had taken in the case of gangrape of the woman allegedly on the orders of a kangaroo court as punishment for falling in love with a man outside her community.
After going through the report of the Chief Secretary, the bench had said the state government had taken steps but more effective action was required to be taken.
The bench had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident on January 24 and had directed the district judge to visit the place and file a report to it.
The victim and her paramour were caught, tied to a tree and assaulted after which they were asked to pay a fine of Rs 50,000. The gangrape took place after the girl expressed her inability to pay the amount.
The victim and her family members in their complaint before the police had said that among those who brutalised her were people old enough to be her father.
All the accused, including village head (known in the area as 'morol'), have been arrested. The rape allegedly took place inside the morol's house.
