Hooda married twice, alleges INLD; attempt to malign CM, says Cong

Chandigarh, March 3
Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), Haryana’s main Opposition party, today alleged that Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda had married twice in violation of the Hindu Marriage Act and demanded that he should step down. However, the Congress denied the allegations as “politically motivated” and said these were aimed at maligning the Chief Minister and tarnishing his clean image.

Addressing newsmen in the press gallery of Haryana Vidhan Sabha, Ellenabad MLA Abhay Singh Chautala and MLA and state unit chief Ashok Arora claimed that they had received papers showing that a case had been filed in a family court in Dehradun in which the alleged wife had sought rights for her teenage son from Hooda.

The Congress termed the allegations “politically motivated” aimed at maligning the Chief Minister. While Hooda evaded a direct response, Power Minister Capt Ajay Yadav, former Speaker Raghbir Kadian and Rohtak MLA BB Batra, addressing mediapersons, said the case based on which the INLD was making the allegations was withdrawn by the woman. “The case was filed on December 17, 2013, and listed for hearing on January 24, 2014. However, the woman filed a petition before the court on January 1, 2014, saying she was not interested in pursuing the matter. The case was dismissed as withdrawn,” Batra said.

Earlier, Chautala said the case, filed in October 2013, dated back to 1988-89 when the Congress was in the Opposition. “According to her affidavit, the CM encouraged her to come forward in politics and started meeting her frequently. He even called her to a hotel in Delhi and promised to marry her. When she got to know that Hooda was already married and had a son, she confronted him. However, Hooda urged her to keep mum,” Chautala said, adding that he promised to divorce his wife and marry her.

Claiming that though Hooda pressurised the woman’s family to marry her off to somebody else, Chautala, quoting from the case, said he maintained relations with her. “The woman’s husband left her. In November 1992, they got married after Hooda told the woman that he had divorced his wife but didn’t want to make it public. He assured her that he would take care of the mother and son, born on February 1, 1994. However, he insulted the woman and threw her out of the house when she went to meet him. He even stopped giving her any maintenance. Also, his family threatened her after which she shifted to Ajmer before returning to Dehra Dun,” Chautala claimed.

“Under the Hindu Marriage Act, the CM could not have married again before divorcing his first wife. However, in the light of this affidavit in court, he should step down as CM. Congress leaders seem to have a tradition of marrying, having children and refusing to own up. We demand an inquiry into the case,” Chautala said.

Earlier, the INLD tried to raise the matter in the House. However, Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kuldeep Sharma did not allow it after which the party MLAs staged a walkout.

Police look for Doon woman

The police went to the house in Premanagar, the address of which was stated by INLD legislators in the Haryana Assembly.
