Chandigarh/Rohtak, February 19
In a windfall for Haryanvis serving in the defence forces, the state government has announced a financial assistance of Rs 2 crore to a Param Vir Chakra recipient or his family and also enhancing financial assistance for a Maha Vir Chakra to Rs 1 core. Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra were earlier being given Rs 31 lakh and Rs 21 lakh, respectively.

Similarly, a steep hike has also been announced in grant of monetary benefits to the recipients of all other service medals.

The announcements made by the CM today will come into force with immediate effect. The decision has come at a time when all political parties are outdoing each other in wooing serving and retired service personnel.

Hooda has announced that the recipient of Vir Chakra will get Rs 50 lakh instead of Rs 15 lakh; recipient of Sena medal, Nao Sena medal and Vayu Sena medal (bravery) will get Rs 21 lakh instead of Rs 7.50 lakh and the recipient of Mention-in-Dispatches will get Rs 10 lakh instead of Rs 5.5 lakh given earlier. The recipient of Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra will get Rs 1 crore, Rs 51 lakh and Rs 31 lakh, respectively. Sena medal, Nao Sena medal and Vayu Sena medal (bravery) winners will get Rs 10 lakh each and the recipient of Mention-in-Dispatches will get Rs 7.50 lakh. The state has also announced an enhanced annuity for all award winners.

According to a state government official, the awards have two components - a onetime payment and the the annuity, a recurring sum given to all recipients every year. The onetime enhanced payment will be given to all soldiers receiving the awards in future while the increase in annuity will be across the board for everyone.

The financial benefit given by Haryana becomes the highest to be paid by a state government in the country. Punjab pays a fixed amount of Rs 30 lakh to PVC and Ashok Chakra recipients, Rs 20 lakh to MVC and Kirti Chakras winners and Rs 15 lakh for Vir Chakra and Shaurya Chakras recipients. Sena medal award amount for gallantry is Rs 7 lakh. These financial awards are applicable to those decorated after 2002. In Punjab the recipients prior to 2002 only get an annuity ranging from Rs 23,100 for a PVC to Rs 6,440 for a Shaurya Chakra.

The government will also give enhanced financial assistance to the World War-II veterans, their widows and ex-servicemen and their widows. The recipients of Yudh Sewa medal, Vishisht Sewa medal, Sarvottam Yudh Sewa medal and other medals too will be given higher financial rewards.
