Haryana kisan ‘rail roko’ stir today, commuters to bear the brunt
Tribune News Service

Rewari, February 6
Giving final touches to its preparation for nationwide “rail roko” agitation, BJP Kisan Morcha has chosen seven places in the state to disrupt railway traffic tomorrow to mount pressure on the union government to accept their long-standing demands.

Kisan morcha activists will sit on the railway tracks at Bhiwani, Rewari, Faridabad, Jind, Sonepat, Karnal and Ambala under the leadership of their senior leaders to protest against the government.

Om Prakash Dhankhar, national president of the morcha, said “indifferent attitude” of the union government towards their demands had left the farmers with no other option but to take such a decision to draw attention of the government towards the farmers’ plight. The decision to announce the agitation had been taken after intense deliberations by senior leaders over the issue, he said.

“Farmers across the country are passing through the worst times due to anti-farmer policies of the Central Government just to benefit capitalists,” said Dhankhar, adding that the morcha would not tolerate such “indiscrimination”.

He said the morcha had been demanding implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, providing interest-less loan for one year on the lines of that given by the Madhya Pradesh Government, rolling back the enhanced price of mixed fertilizers, giving back the acquired land falling under denotified SEZ to the farmers, etc.

“Senior leaders in Faridabad, Karnal, Bhiwani, Rewari, Sonepat and Ambala district will lead activists in disrupting railway traffic in their areas,” said Dhankhar.

Meanwhile, Rewari District Magistrate has imposed Section 144 of the IPC in the wake of the ‘rail roko’ call given by the kisan morcha. “Stern action will be taken against those found disrupting railway traffic and damaging railway property,” he said, adding tight security arrangements have been made to deal with the agitation.

Morcha’s demands
Morcha had been demanding implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, providing interest-less loan, rolling back the enhanced price of mixed fertilizers and giving back the acquired land falling under denotified SEZ to the farmers.

Security steps
Ambala: Railway administration, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP) have made elaborate security arrangements at all key railway stations of the division to deal with the agitation. Ashok Kumar, SP, Haryana GRP, said letters had been written to SPs of various districts for providing additional police force. Besides, DCs have also been asked to deploy duty magistrates to deal with the situation. Ambala railway division’s GM Anil Kathpal said necessary arrangements had been made to ensure that the rail services were not disrupted.
