Congress divides on religious lines: BJP New Delhi, January 18 Addressing the party’s National Council, senior party leaders held Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi responsible for the country’s economic, social and political woes and promised to bring it back on the rails with “holistic growth, employment and freedom from rising prices and corruption”. India's success story is waiting for the BJP to come to power, they said, accusing the Congress of trying its best to stop the saffron party from coming to power. “Overall, the country suffered and the buck stops at the door of the PM and the Congress party. The country has witnessed a dark decade under the UPA regime,” senior leader Arun Jaitley said. There seemed a distinct effort to appear inclusive and moderate on Article 370 that grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir, with party chief Rajnath Singh saying the party will have no objection if it helps in the development of the state. “J&K is a very serious, very sensitive region for us. If J&K develops because of Article 370, then we have no objection in keeping it,” he said, but if it was a “conspiracy” to stop the state from joining Indian mainstream then his party would not accept it under any circumstances. This marks a subtle shift in the BJP’s earlier hard line stance on the Article’s repeal. Modi had earlier advocated a debate on whether or not Article 370 had benefited the state, but the BJP refused to acknowledge it as softening of stance. Rajnath criticised Sonia for calling the BJP “divisive and communal” whereas “it was the Congress which believed in practicing politics by dividing people along religious lines”.
