Attack on Patiala jail staff; 9 hurt Patiala, January 6 The injured staff members - Inderjeet Singh Kahlon, Swaran Singh, Balwinder Singh, Devinder Singh, Paramjeet Singh, Tarlochan Singh, Tarsem, Surjeet Singh and Gurmej Singh - have been admitted to the Government Rajindra Hospital. Gurpreet Singh Gopi’s possession during checking in the central barrack around 7.30 am. “Gopi hit Kahlon with an iron bar on the wrist and shoulder after he was pulled out of the barrack for checking. Havildar Paramjeet Singh also came under attack as he tried to intervene. Soon Harvinder Singh, who is serving life term for murder, and some undertrials joined Gopi and attacked other staff members with bars and utensils,” he added. Help arrived soon after other officials came to know about the attack. “Harvinder Singh is a habitual offender and was recently shifted to the Patiala jail from Sangrur jail after he misbehaved with the Jail Superintendent there. Patiala District Magistrate GK Singh has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the attack and sought a report within 15 days. Earlier, SDM Gurpal Singh Chahal, in his report, stated that the inmates and undertrials attacked the jail staff during morning search, leaving many injured. Severe staff crunch The Central Jail, Patiala, which houses hardcore criminals, is one of the biggest in Punjab. Sources say around 2,300 inmates and under-trials are lodged in the jail, which has only 150 officials against the sanctioned posts of 250.
