BJP rejects offer to form govt; AAP invited
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 12
Delhi Lt Governor of Najeeb Jung today invited Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal to discuss to government formation in the National Capital on Saturday.

AAP leader and party spokesperson Manish Sisodia said: "Arvind got a call from the Lt Governor, after Harsh Vardhan declined to form the government. We have been given a time for Saturday at 10.30 am for meeting with the Lt Governor."

The invitation came after the BJP declined the offer to form the government saying it did not have the required numbers in the 70-member House so it would sit in the Opposition. BJP's chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan, who was today invited by the Lt Governor, refused to form the government on the pretext of not having majority in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.

He said: "The Lt Governor has written instructions from the President of India that whosever will be the leader of the House in the Assembly would be required to prove majority on the floor. As the BJP cannot prove majority, it prefers to sit in the Opposition."

Thanking the Lt Governor for inviting him to form the government, Harsh Vardhan said 36 MLAs were required in the Delhi Assembly to form the government. As the BJP-SAD alliance had only 32 seats, it could not form the government. The Lt Governor should invite the other parties if they had the required numbers, he said while talking to media after meeting the Lt Governor. In a letter to the LG, Vardhan said: "The BJP believes in transparency, honesty and responsibility. Coming to power is not the aim of the party. The BJP believes that power is a medium to serve the citizens of the country."
