Mumbai, December 7
Activists of the Republican Party of India (RPI) today waved black flags and raised slogans condemning the Yerawada Jail administration here for its decision to release actor Sanjay Dutt on parole for a month. Dutt, convicted under the Arms Act for illegal possession of weapons in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case, had made a plea for temporary release from the jail stating his wife Maanyata was unwell.

However, newspapers this morning published photographs of Maanyata purportedly attending the screening of R...Rajkumar hosted by actor Shahid Kapoor at a studio in Juhu. Later she along with other celebrities were seen a birthday party, raising questions about Dutt’s claim regarding her illness. Pune Divisional Commissioner Prabhakar Deshmukh had granted parole to the actor on recommendation of prison authorities yesterday.

Taking note of the controversy, Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil has ordered an inquiry to ascertain the basis for granting parole to the Bollywood star. “We will look into how Sanjay Dutt was granted parole and a report would be ready by Monday,” Patil said. He added that Maanyata’s medical report on the basis of which parole was granted to Dutt would be scrutinised.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shiv Sena are expected to raise the issue in the state assembly. The police said security was beefed up outside the residence of Dutt as well in anticipation of more protests.
