School tank’s dirty water leaves 40 Sirsa kids ill
Tribune News Service

Sirsa, December 4
Forty children were taken ill today after consuming contaminated water from a school tank in Modia Khera village in Sirsa.

Children of the government middle school started vomiting and complained of pain in the abdomen after drinking water from the tank in the morning. They were rushed to the Sirsa general hospital. The doctors said the children showed symptoms of mild poisoning.

While 36 children were discharged after first aid, four had to be hospitalised due to their bad condition. Suspecting a foul play, villagers informed the police, which recorded statements of teachers and children at the school.

School in charge Balram Singh said: “Children were playing football before the morning assembly. As the bell rang, some of them went towards the water tank. As soon as they drank water from the tank, they complained of obnoxious odour and bad taste.”

“Two teachers, who subsequently tasted water, also found it unfit for drinking,” said sarpanch Krishan Kumar, adding that soon the condition of some children deteriorated as they started vomiting and complained of dizziness.
