Amritsar, November 2
The police today arrested a Punjab Police constable who was sentenced to 35 years of imprisonment by the Supreme Court in a case of disappearance of seven members of a family in 1991. He was later presented in a local court.

Constable Balwinder Singh and his brother Deputy Superintendent of Police Baldev Singh had been sentenced to 35 years of imprisonment for kidnapping and trespass. DSP Baldev Singh is still at large.

The two had served 12 years in prison but were on out bail as an appeal was pending in the Supreme Court. The two had failed to surrender even after the court directions.

On a complaint filed by Inder Singh, the Supreme Court had in September set aside the conviction of the then DSP Baldev Singh and constable Balwinder Singh for conspiracy and murder of seven persons. They were held guilty of trespass and abduction for which they were awarded five years in jail for each of the seven abductions. The sentence was to run concurrently, thus making the total sentence of 35 years.

Amrik Singh Mann, counsel for the complainant, said: “The two had served 12 years in prison but were on bail. The two had failed to surrender. Former DSP Baldev Singh is now absconding.”
