‘Honour killing’: Cops stop cremation in Yamunanagar Yamunanagar, September 29
The police swung into action today morning and removed the body of Manjit Kaur (21) from the pyre which had already been lit for cremation after she died late last night. Manjit had reportedly eloped with a youth of the same village on Thursday. A case under Section 302 (for murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence and giving false information) of the IPC has been registered against the victim’s father Mahinder Singh and other members of the family. The police said Mahinder Singh had been taken into custody and was being interrogated. The police had been informed by some villagers about the haste being shown by her parents in cremating the body. After being informed, a team of officials from the Radour police station reached the spot. The team members immediately took possession of the body. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination at the civil hospital. The police had to face an irate mob, which even tried to manhandle SHO Sandeep Kumar. It is learnt that Manjit had eloped with a youth. The family launched a search and located her in Ludhiana. She was brought back to the village on Saturday. Late in the night, the family raised an alarm claiming that Manjit consumed some drug as she was unwell and died.
