Shut down terror machinery, Manmohan tells Pak at UN

PM Manmohan Singh addresses the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday. AFPPrime Minister Manmohan Singh delivered a strong message to Pakistan in his speech at the 68th session of the UN General Assembly today stating that the “terrorist machinery that draws its sustenance from Pakistan must be shut down.”

Manmohan-Obama meet boosts defence, security ties

US President Barack Obama walks down to the White House portico to see off PM Manmohan Singh after a meeting at the Oval Office on Friday. Those familiar with protocol said they have not seen such a gesture in the recent past. PTIThe US and India sought more intensive engagement on a gamut of issues, including defence, security, bilateral trade, and efforts to dismantle terrorist safe havens and promote clean energy.

Was ousted because of peace talks with India, says Sharif
Nawaz Sharif New York, September 28
Ahead of crucial talks with his Indian counterpart, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today said he was ousted from power in a military coup in 1999 because he started peace talks with India.
Sharif made these remarks in his address to the Pakistani American community here.

Usmani effect: Mumbai cops to handcuff criminals in court
Mumbai, September 28
After Afzal Usmani, an alleged member of the Indian Mujahideen, escaped from a city court last week, the Mumbai police has decided to handcuff criminals with serious charges against them when they are taken to court. Under the law, the police escorts are to seek permission from the judge to handcuff the accused in their custody. Police officials in Maharashtra have asked police personnel to obtain permission from judges as far as possible to handcuff those charged with serious crimes so that they do not escape, sources said.

Mumbai building collapse: Scribe among dead, toll 50
Mumbai, September 28
The death toll in yesterday's building collapse in Mazgaon area here had reached 50, while 32 persons were injured, BMC officials said this evening. Yogesh Pawar (29), a journalist with Marathi daily 'Sakaal', and his father Anant Pawar, who lived in the building, died in the mishap.
