New Delhi, August 30
Bhutan today reassured India that it would not allow its territory to be used for anti-India activities by insurgent groups operating in Northeastern states.

The assurance came at a meeting Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde had with Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay shortly after the latter's arrival here on a six-day visit to India. This is the first visit abroad by Tobgay after he assumed office in July.

Shinde expressed confidence that the security cooperation between India and Bhutan would be further enhanced under Tobgay's leadership.

The Bhutanese PM also held meetings with Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh. He will have delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tomorrow and also meet other Indian leaders. During the meeting with Chidambaram, Tobgay discussed the financial package that New Delhi is expected to announce for Bhutan tomorrow.

Chidambaram told the visiting leader that India was committed to provide all possible assistance to Bhutan for the economic development of the Himalayan nation.

India is keeping a close watch on the developments in the Maldives in the run-up to the September 7 Presidential elections in the Indian Ocean archipelago. Following an invitation from the Election Commission of Maldives, New Delhi is sending a high-level team of observers to oversee the crucial polls.
