Dehradun, June 30
Amid controversy over the exact number of people dead or washed away in the worst natural disaster in Uttarakhand, Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna today said the exact figures may never be known as the estimates of casualties vary from several hundred to several thousands.

Rain warning: Govt, MeT play blame game
Dehradun, June 30
A fresh controversy has erupted on the reported warning of heavy rain in the Garhwal region by the Meteorological Department on June 15 to the state government. The Met Department says prior warning was issued to the government. State Disaster Mitigation Centre and the ITBP, government officials, however, say the warning was of a general nature.

Kin of missing persons still hopeful
Dehradun, June 30
On entering a large hall at the Police Lines, visitors looking for missing relatives make a beeline for the notice boards set up on one side. But a grim reality hits home as the boards, besides other information, bear pictures of bodies recovered by rescue teams from the flood-ravaged areas.

Two civilians killed during Army search operation in Kashmir
Srinagar, June 30
Two persons, including a teenager, were killed when Army men allegedly opened fire during a search operation at Markundal village in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district today. The Army said it would investigate the incident and act against the guilty, if any. The police has registered a case of murder against the Army personnel.

Landslide win for Pratibha as Cong retains Mandi LS seat
Shimla, June 30
The Congress stamped its authority in Himachal Pradesh today as party candidate Pratibha Singh won the Mandi Lok Sabha byelection by over 1.36 lakh votes. Pratibha secured 3,53,469 votes (60.09 per cent) as against 2,16,765 (37.23 percent) polled by BJP candidate Jai Ram Thakur. She had won the seat by around 66,000 votes in 2004.

India seeks early trilateral meeting on Afghanistan
New Delhi, June 30
As the 2014 deadline for NATO troop pullout from Afghanistan draws closer, New Delhi has sought an early meeting of the India-US-Afghanistan trilateral dialogue to consider ways and means to stabilise the situation in the battle-scarred nation. The matter was raised during the talks between US Special Representative on Afghanistan and Pakistan James Dobbins and Indian officials in New Delhi earlier this week.

Global firm in talks with Indian agencies for in-flight connectivity

New Delhi, June 30
On October 5, 2011, a foreign airliner was cruising over the Atlantic Ocean above 30,000 ft. The flight was routine with one exception: A team from the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), India's only technical intelligence gathering agency, was conducting an experiment thousands of kilometers away in India to intercept real-time conversation and data (web surfing etc.) between a passenger on this flight and a 'user' on Indian soil.

US ‘bugs’ EU embassies, computer networks
Berlin, June 30
American intelligence service used bugs, phone taps and cyber monitoring to obtain information from European Union embassies and offices in Washington, New York and Brussels, a German weekly reported today. The disclosure triggered strong reaction from EU leaders who demanded full and speedy clarification from the US.
