Innovative young inventors,
driven by passion and purpose, get the seal of approval from some of
the top scientists
Augusto Rodrigues
THEY
never expected the accolades and back-thumping when they set out to
give shape to their innovative concepts. But that's what Shambhavi
Joshi, Chinmay Marathe, SidharthWani and Chinmay Jadhav got once they
were through with their project — a pair of sandals which not just
protects a woman but also immobilises the attacker. The trigger for the
invention came after the horrific gangrape of a Delhi girl in a moving
bus on December 16, last year. The four children from Thane (Maharashtra)
aged between 12 and 14, decided to do their bit for the safety of
women.

A fair act
Theatre has remained a
male bastion for ages but, of late, there has been a change. Today
women are not only writing plays but also running their own theatre
groups. They are producing, directing and performing significant plays
across the world
Shoma A. Chatterji
LIKE every art movement,
theatre has always been dominated by men. This reflects the
patriarchal world where women need to put up a persistent struggle to
be heard, seen and recognised. But the struggle goes on because for
women, to be involved totally in is not easy and is still an uphill
struggle.broad brush

Little food factories
Sprouting of grains,
seeds, pulses make these more beneficial and healthy, as it increases
bioavailability of proteins, Vitamins B, C and E, potassium,
phosphorus and magnesium
Ishi Khosla
NO prescription for
health seems complete without a mention of sprouts. Originally, part
of Chinese cuisine as bean sprouts, what makes these so popular with
nutrition experts, is worth exploring. Perhaps the most exciting is
the multiplication of nutrients by the germination process itself.

She climbed to conquer
Arunima proved to
herself and the world that no challenge is insurmountable
Geetu Vaid
THIS aptly describes the
feat of Arunima Sinha, who earned the distinction of being the first
woman with a prosthetic leg and the first amputee in India to reach
the summit on May 21, 2013. Though the world acknowledged her feat
after she conquered the world’s highest peak, scaling momentous
mountains of crisis is nothing new for this 26-year-old petite girl
from UP.
‘I was left dumbstruck’
India's first woman to
climb the Everest, Bachendri Pal, has been Arunima’s mentor,
trainer, and role model in this endeavour. Pal was the first person
whom Arunima contacted after getting discharged from the AIIMS in 2011
and sought guidance for following her dream.

circles

researchers of the Prew Research Centre, in association with KRC
Research, have found that about 75 per cent of women and about 63% of
men use social media when they are online. The research has
implications for social media sites as well as those who seek business
on such platforms.

Before you stick your

this Spanish island. Yes, it has spectacular beaches and a pulsating
night life. Yes, the rich and the famous come here to get their
sculpted bodies tanned. Yes, its population swells to an incredible
one million in summer.

Showbiz toll: Lives cut
short
Jiah Khan’s recent
suicide has shown how vulnerable a starlet can be in the film
industry. It doesn’t have patience for those susceptible to
emotional upheavals
Saibal Chatterjee
Jiah Khan was only 25.
She was desperate to make it big in showbiz. But the Mumbai movie
industry had other plans. A combination of factors, including what
looks like a messy relationship, drove young woman to suicide. Jiah
isn’t the first. Sadly, she won’t be the last. Bollywood has
claimed many young lives over the years. The industry has no space for
also-rans.
