Rescue efforts gather pace
19,000 await help as rain threat looms

Dehradun/New Delhi, June 23
Amid conflicting reports about the mounting casualty figures in the worst deluge in Uttarakhand, defence forces today stepped up efforts to rescue those stranded in the hilly terrains more than a week after the tragedy struck. State Disaster Management Minister Yashpal Arya denied agency reports attributing to him that the casualty figure had crossed 5,000.

Kerry pushes for bilateral investment pact

51% voting in Mandi bypoll
Mandi, June 23
Nearly 51 per cent turnout was witnessed in the Mandi Lok Sabha bypoll till the reports last came in on Sunday. Devesh Kumar, returning officer for Mandi, said the polling was peaceful with 50.69% voters exercising their right to franchise. “Final reports from 250 polling stations are awaited,” he said.
