Lays foundation stone of country’s first defence university in Gurgaon
Binola (Gurgaon), May 23
Twelve years after the Kargil Review Committee recommended setting up of a specialised defence university to build a strategic culture in the country, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday laid the foundation stone of the Indian National Defence University (INDU) here.

4 new colleges to come up on defence varsity campus
Binola (Gurgaon), May 23
The Indian National Defence University (INDU) will be set up as a fully autonomous institution constituted under an act of Parliament. While the President of India would act as the Visitor, the Defence Minister will be its Chancellor. The vice-chancellor, who will carry the rank of President of INDU, will be an officer in the rank of the Army Commander or equivalent from the IAF or the Navy.

Mumbai Crime Branch summons CSK honcho
Mumbai, May 23
Gurunath Meiyappan, CEO of Chennai Super Kings, has been asked to appear tomorrow in Mumbai before the Crime Branch in connection with the IPL betting scandal. A Mumbai police team today visited Chennai to quiz Meiyappan.

Chandila ‘paid Rs 12 lakh for spot-fixing in IPL-5’
New Delhi, May 23
Ajit Chandila was allegedly paid Rs 12 lakh by a bookie for spot-fixing in the last year’s IPL but the attempt to manipulate matches failed as the cricketer could not play many matches, Delhi Police sources claimed today. Sources said Chandila gave three cheques of Rs 4 lakh each.

The spot-fixing saga in the ongoing IPL today took a dramatic turn with ICC withdrawing controversial Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf from the panel of match officials for the upcoming Champions Trophy in England as his role in the scandal is being investigated by Mumbai Police.

Heat wave claims life as Amritsar sizzles at 48°C
Chandigarh, May 23
The current heat wave claimed first life as Amrik Singh (46), a resident of Shakri village, died late last evening at Khan Chhapri village in Tarn Taran district. He was on his way back home after visiting some relatives. The region was in the grip of severe heat wave as the temperatures dipped sharply. Amritsar was hottest in three decades with the maximum temperature reaching 48°C, said IMD officials.

Muslim leaders flay attack, call for calm

Islamic community leaders in the UK have appealed for calm after condemning a terror attack in which two Muslim extremists executed an off duty white British soldier in broad daylight outside the Woolwich army barracks in south London. One of the two attackers who tried to disembowel and behead the young soldier has been named as a British citizen of Nigerian descent called Michael Adebolajo. (Details on world page)

Pak soldiers ‘assault’ porters carrying BSF supplies near LoC in Poonch
Jammu, May 23
Soon after the killing of two Indian soldiers by Pakistani soldiers in Poonch and a 19-km incursion into Ladakh by the Chinese, nine suspected Pakistan Army Border Action Team (BAT) men roughed up a group of porters in the Sabjian belt along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district and let them off after snatching supplies meant for the BSF.
