Afghan president Hamid Karzai to meet PM today
Jalandhar, May 21 (ANI): Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai, who is on a three-day visit to India, will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday in order to ask for more military assistance from India for Afghanistan. Karzai, who arrived in Punjab on Monday, was conferred with an honorary doctorate degree, Honoris Causa from President Pranab Mukherjee in the Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar. Addressing the students and dignitaries, Karzai expressed his gratitude for India’s assistance in uplifting educational standards in the country. Karzai is likely to discuss potential arms deals with Indian officials at a time when tensions are running high on Afghanistan's disputed border with Pakistan.



Maoists beat woman to death in Jharkhand
Jharkhand, May 21 (ANI): Maoists hit nearly 6 persons with batons during a marriage ceremony in Gumla district of Jharkhand, after which a woman belonging to a local administrative body succumbed to her injuries, while police remained tight-lipped on the issue. Locals claimed that Maoists belonging to the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI) attacked them. Maoists have significantly increased their presence in tribal and rural regions in the states of Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha as well as certain parts of western Maharashtra and southern Andhra Pradesh. The left wing extremists say they are fighting for the rights of millions of poor and landless people however hundreds of these people lose their life in the violence, perpetrated by the rebels every year.



Giant tornado devastates Oklahoma killing at least 91.
New Delhi, May 21 (ANI): A giant tornado with winds of up to 200 miles per hour tore through the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore on Monday, killing atleast 91 people, 20 of them children. Rescue teams raced against the setting sun and worked into the darkness in search of survivors as the dangerous storm damaged at least two schools. The injured flooded into hospitals, and the authorities said many people remained trapped, even as rescue workers struggled to make their way through debris-clogged streets to the devastated suburb of Moore, where much of the damage occurred.


Coimbatore introduces new technology for passport security
Coimbatore, May 21 (ANI): In order to completely eliminate circulation of fake passports, the ministry of foreign affairs has launched a new model of passport in Coimbatore. The new passport will contain a letter screen image or the ghost image of the holder along with his actual image and personal details. The regional passport officer of Coimbatore, S. Sasikumar also spoke in favour of the new system.
