SC turns down plea to ban IPL
Pulls up BCCI for ‘callousness’

New Delhi, May 21
The Supreme Court dismissed a petition on Tuesday seeking to scrap the remaining matches of the lucrative Twenty20 cricket competition amid growing concerns about corruption in the sport.

The court pulled up the BCCI for its "lackadaisical" approach in dealing with irregularities and spot-fixing in the IPL and directed it to bring errant elements to book and restore glory of the gentleman's game.

A Bench of Justices BS Chauhan and Dipak Misra directed the Board to take immediate step to clean up the shorter form of the game.

"The problem is lackadaisical approach of the BCCI and it must stop," the Bench said.

Pacer S Sreesanth and two other players were arrested along with 11 bookies on Thursday on suspicion of spot-fixing in the IPL. The case has prompted the government to look at the possibility of introducing a law to combat match-fixing and spot-fixing.

Social activist Sudarsh Awasti lodged the petition demanding the scrapping of the remaining four IPL matches, including Sunday's final. The court also asked the BCCI to submit a report within two weeks with details of the players' involvement in the scandal and what action is being taken against them. — Agencies
