32 firms to get notices on undeveloped coal blocks

The Government is likely to issue show-cause notices to allocatees of 32 captive coal blocks, including Jindal Steel and Power, NTPC, Tata Steel and SAIL, for failing to develop the blocks on time.

Dutt says threat to life; wants to surrender in Pune jail
Mumbai/New Delhi, May 14
Citing threat to his life from fundamentalists, Sanjay Dutt today sought permission from a TADA court to surrender in jail even as the Supreme Court refused to grant the Bollywood star time beyond May 16 to give himself up.

GOM set up to insulate CBI from external influence

Days after the Supreme Court’s scathing observation that the Central Bureau of Investigation was like a ‘caged parrot’, the government today formed a Group of Ministers (GoM) to draft a law to insulate the investigating agency from external influence and grant it greater autonomy.

Indian Navy’s first supersonic fighter MiG-29K will be a “game changer” as the country expands its sea-going fleet in line with its growing aspirations of a regional power controlling the security of the Indian Ocean while attempting to match pace with China. The first lot of 18 MiG-29Ks was commissioned this week at Goa and will be based on the deck of the sea-borne aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov (renamed INS Vikramaditya), which is slated to arrive this yearend.

Cyclone leaves hundreds homeless

At least seven people have died and nearly 3,000 left homeless as the cyclonic storm ‘Mahasen’ caused heavy rains in the north and eastern parts of Sri Lanka. The Disaster Management Centre here said that at least 7 people were killed, while two more are missing as a result of the storm.
