Land Bill gets broad consensus, likely to pass Parliament test

New Delhi, April 18
The government today achieved “broad consensus” on the long-pending Land Acquisition Bill, paving the way for the contentious legislation to be taken up for consideration and passage in the Budget Session that resumes on Monday.

JPC on 2G clears PM, says Raja ‘misled’ him
New Delhi, April 18
Moving on the expected lines, the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the 2G Spectrum scam today gave a clean chit to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram, a move which has been flayed as a "cover-up" by Opposition parties.

Badals meet Prez, seek mercy for Bhullar

Cong woos Nitish with Rs 12,000-cr Bihar grant
Mulayam’s Bundelkhand gets Rs 4,400 crore, Odisha Rs 250 crore

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) today sanctioned a Rs 12,000 crore package for Nitish Kumar's Bihar under the Backward Regions Grant Fund, a significant move given the raging turmoil in the BJP-led NDA of which the JD-U is a key player.

J&K minister slaps senior officer in full public view
Jammu, April 18
Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Home Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo allegedly slapped Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kishtwar Development Authority (KDA) Riaz Ahmed Choudhary in full public view at the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) of Kishtwar district this morning. When the officer tried to resist slapping by holding the minister’s hand, National Conference workers present there gave a severe thrashing to the CEO.

2 arrested in Bhiwani Dalit murder case
Bhiwani, April 18
Two persons have been arrested for the murder of a Dalit youth in Devsar village here today. Police made no disclosure about the motive behind the gruesome killing, saying it would be premature to do so.

New foreign trade policy to boost exports, revive SEZs
New Delhi, April 18
In a bid to boost exports and bring down the current account deficit (CAD), the government today announced the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) which included major measures to revive the special economic zones (SEZ) and allowing exporters in all sectors to import capital goods at zero per cent duty under the Export Promotion Capital Goods (EPCG) scheme.

German Bakery blast convict Baig to hang
Mumbai, April 18
The Pune Sessions Court today sentenced to death Mirza Himayat Baig, 30, in connection with the 2010 bomb blast at Pune’s German Bakery that claimed 17 lives. Three days ago, Pune sessions court Special Judge NP Dhote had held Baig guilty in the case in which he was the lone accused arrested.
