Land compensation scam of
Rs 98.77 lakh unearthed
Jalandhar, April 17 The matter came to light when JIT officials went to the New Bashirpura locality last evening to take possession of the acquired land. Devinder Kumar, who owned a huge chunk of land at the site, refused to give possession as he said he already had taken a stay from the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding the acquisition of his land. Devinder Kumar said he placed on record a copy of the court orders, CWP 3559 of 2011. The officials of the JIT told him that he had already availed himself of the compensation to the tune of nearly Rs 1 crore. The farmer said he was in for a big shock and immediately contacted Congress leader Varinder Sharma with whom
he met the Superintending Engineer of the JIT Mukul Soni. They were further directed to meet Land Acquisition Collector-cum-SDM-I Iqbal Singh Sandhu. Sandhu said he immediately heard the matter and initiated an inquiry at his own level. The officer said he found that the applicant for compensation, using a fake voter ID card and a fake affidavit, had taken a compensation from him on October 25, 2012. He said the applicant in connivance with patwari Sukhdev Singh also managed to produce a fake jamabandi. Sandhu said as a safety measure he even sought the identification report of the applicant from a numberdar. He said numberdar Prem Parkash of Purupur village, too, was called, but he said he did not know who the man faking his ID was and that he had been told by the patwari to vouch for his identification, to which he agreed in good faith. Sandhu elaborated further that he tracked the record through which the clearing of the cheque was done. He said the cheque was cleared at the Railway Road branch of Punjab National Bank while it was produced by the Reru branch of Punjab and Sind Bank. He said the details of the fake bank account in the name of Devinder Kumar were tracked in which his entire ID matched with him, but not his phone number. But this number was found to be not working. The bank statement revealed that two cheques for Rs 10 lakh each from the fake bank account were credited in the accounts of Kulwant Singh of Bhagwana village in Phagwara and Ravi Kumar of Bilga. The details of the account of Ravi Kumar in the Bilga branch of HDFC Bank led to the revelation by Ravi Kumar that it was in fact a youth named Sanjeev Kumar of Sanjay Gandhi Colony who using a fake ID of Devinder Kumar earned the big buck fudging documents and even top officials of the Revenue Department got their share. He
also divulged that the other account holder Kulwant Singh was the brother-in-law of patwari Sukhdev Singh. The New Baradari police has started investigation into the matter and rounded up the the persons involved in the scam. Reru branch of Punjab and Sind Bank in controversy again
The Reru branch of Punjab and Sind Bank, which remained in controversy after the recent locker-cutting case, is again in news. The kingpin of the scam, Sanjeev Kumar, using a fake ID, had opened an account in the bank branch and was operating from it. The SDM showed his fake voter card and account statements of the bank, which carried Sanjeev’s picture instead of Devinder Kumar. |

Sutlan. He has also done substantial roles in Yug, Chandrakanta and Dekha Ek
Khwaab. Known for his baritone voice and roles in movies like Aamir
Khan-starrer Mangal Pandey, Khan is the son of legendary Hindustani classical vocalist Ustad Amir Khan. At last, the police has to endorse Bikkar’s views,” he

2 maize-soaking machines to be installed in state: Lakhowal
Jalandhar, April 17 "With the installation of these machines, it will be easier for the farmers to get the crop dried to required moisture level. Besides, it will also help in the promotion of maize cultivation and the farmers will save Rs 200 per quintal of the crop,” he said. Emphasising the need for crop diversification, Lakhowal said there was need for state farmers to get out of wheat and paddy cultivation. “The underground water level is going down and more tubewells are required to fetch water for paddy cultivation which in turn leads to more power demand. Diversification towards maize cultivation will help save power and water as well,” he added. About wheat procurement in state mandis, he said a total of 1,792 purchase centres had been set up for wheat procurement. Lakhowal said it was expected that there would be production of about 140 lakh tonnes of wheat this season whereas wheat procured was 130.54 lakh tonnes during the last season. "About 25 lakh tonnes of old wheat stock is already there in the godowns in Punjab. A request has been made to the Centre that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) should shift the same so that there is no scarcity of space for wheat storage this season,” he said. Till yesterday, about 5 lakh tonnes of wheat had arrived in the mandis which was 600 per cent more than the corresponding period last year, Lakhowal said. |
