Indo-German relations took a major step forward with the two countries signing six major agreements pertaining to higher education, civil security research, agriculture, infrastructure and green energy (see box) at the end of the second Inter-Governmental Consultative meeting held here today in the presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Saini’s appointment as Punjab Police chief upheld

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today ruled that charges of wrongful confinement, kidnapping and abduction against Punjab Director-General of Police Sumedh Singh Saini do not constitute “moral turpitude” and the orders of his appointment as police chief do not require to be interfered with.

The Supreme Court will deliver its judgment tomorrow on Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar’s plea for commuting to life imprisonment the death penalty awarded to him for the September 10, 1993 bomb attack on the then Youth Congress president MS Bitta.

Antony seeks report on plaint by naval officer’s wife
New Delhi, April 11
A complaint by a serving naval officer’s wife against her husband and certain officers in Kochi today prompted Defence Minister AK Antony to seek a report from the Navy. Antony has asked the Defence Secretary to furnish the details of the case.

MoD ‘inclined’ to correct rank pay inconsistencies: Air Chief
Chandigarh, April 11
While pointing out that the implementation of the Supreme Court verdict in the rank pay case pertaining to the Fourth Pay Commission meet the aspirations and the expectations of the affected officers only partially, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne, has said the Ministry of Defence “appeared inclined” to accept the services’ view on the shortcomings in the government orders.

PC to sell India story in Canada, US
New Delhi, April 11
P Chidambaram
Finance Minister P Chidambaram will hold road shows in Canada and the US next week to attract foreign investments given the high current account deficit and later attend the annual spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington. Chidambaram has been visiting major global financial hubs such as Japan, Germany, Hong Kong and Singapore to project the country as an investment destination.
