Two tourists killed as bus rams into truck
Amritsar, March 29 Malkeet Singh, investigating officer, said a case under Sections 304-A, 337, 338 and 427 of the IPC was registered against the unidentified driver of the bus, who fled after the incident. The bus (WB-23-B-7193) was carrying tourists from West Bengal and was coming to Amritsar for paying obeisance at various religious places from the Jalandhar side when the accident took place. Preliminary investigations revealed that the unidentified driver of the bus dozed off and lost control over the bus, which came off the road and hit a stationary truck (RJ-31-G-4240), said Malkeet Singh. The left side of the bus was badly damaged. Majority of the tourists, who were seriously injured in the mishap, were sitting on this side. They were rushed to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital by the residents of the nearby areas. |
MC team removes obstacles on Lawrence Road, SSSS Chowk
Amritsar, March 29 The busy SSSS Chowk, where the proposal of flyover was conceptualised and later scrapped following objections raised by the Archeological Survey of India, would always be a mess when it comes to managing traffic on this point. With a school, named as Sant Singh Sukha Singh (abbreviation of which is used to identify the chowk), on one of its edge, the situation becomes from bad to worse during the closing time of the school. The permanent deputation of policemen too failed to deliver desired results. The reason is that the road is attached to roads in all the four directions in a faulty way. If there is slip road on its one side, the other side sans dividers. The real culprits are these dividers only which distinguish the slip road, which was least required on this stretch. It not only poses threat to the moving traffic, but also hinders the flow of traffic. Bakshi Ram Arora said the objective was to streamline the traffic at this point with the scant infrastructure and resources they had. "The operation of removing the least required dividers was taken up in the early morning. The reason was that you find less traffic flow then. With the removal of these dividers, the road has got visibly widened than before," he said. While the MC is widening the busy Lawrence Road, it is also initiating measures to curb rampant encroachments on the footpaths by shopkeepers in the area. In this direction, Mayor Bakshi Ram Arora with the MC team removed encroachment opposite Awaam Hotel on Lawrence Road. "We could get free at least 15 feet space. It has further widened the road. Besides this, once this whole stretch becomes encroachment-free, we have plans to demark the parking space with yellow lines. We have passed an amount of around Rs 15 lakh for yellow line markings on key points of the city," he said. |
Passengers suffer as farmers block rail traffic
Amritsar, March 29 Pilgrims and tourists were the worst affected as they had to wait for arduous long hours at the railway station. A pilgrim from Delhi, RN Singh, said he along with his wife and two minor children was waiting for the arrival of their train to return to Delhi. Being an employee with a private concern at the National Capital he wanted to utilise the holidays of Holi by paying obeisance at the Golden Temple. "Everything had gone smooth but the agitation had made them victims without any fault of theirs," he said. He said his family had stayed at Mata Ganga Niwas, an inn being run by the SGPC in the Golden Temple complex. He said they checked out at 12 noon and after staying sometime at Harmandar Sahib arrived at the railway station at 2.15 pm. Before moving to the railway station he tried to contact at the railway inquiry over phone several times but in vain. His family was shocked to learn that the railway officials were not aware of the fresh time of departure of their train, Shan-E-Punjab. His wife Sonia said it was arduous to wait at the station while sitting on the stairs at platform number 2, which has limited seating space. She was more concerned about her sons Ekam (6), and Antarjot (4), as they had to attend their school tomorrow morning. She said her family visited the Golden Temple to pay their respects at least once a year. She said the government must sensitise people not to block a vital installation like Railways, which is used by common citizens. She said there were umpteen ways to put across their concern and issues than to harass common public this way. Another passenger Ajay said his family had to join a maternal uncle during his farewell at Delhi, but the waiting period at the railway station seemed to be unending. He said he visited the inquiry window many a time but no fresh timing had been announced. He felt that there must be a system in place to alert the passenger before such a blockade. Pointing towards a large number of passengers at the railway station he said then they would have come as per the schedule time of their trains and needed not to overburden the limited infrastructure at the railway station. Another passenger BS Rana said there was no toilet facility at the platform number 2 and the persons in need have to cross all over to the platform number 1 to utilise the service. |

Police investigations revealed that the drug peddlers roam in various vulnerable areas in search of their customers. "They sale habit-forming drugs to their trusted customers, including students and persons from lower strata," a police officer said.
