Brothers in rhythm
It’s very seldom that two siblings create a symphony that borders on the sublime. In the case of brothers Madhusudan Barman and Gopal Barman, well-known for their tabla-sreekhol jugalbandi, every note that emanates from their respective instruments is music to the soul, literally. The percussionists from Kolkata, in Chandigarh to delight the audience at the Tagore Theatre as part of 43rd Pracheen Kala Kendra Nritya and Sangeet Sammelan, are truly classical in every sense of the word.

As Atish Mukhopadhyay, a Kolkata-based musician and sarod player, engages in an intellectual combat that chases the rich lineage of Indian classical music, he discusses various ways that could redeem its fading sheen. The young artist was in Chandigarh to perform a sarod recital with his band, Maihar, at the Panjab University on Tuesday.
