New Delhi, March 20
Faced with an unprecedented crisis following the exit of the DMK from the UPA, the Congress today emphasised that the ruling coalition was steady. Seeking to retrieve lost ground in Tamil Nadu, the party also dismissed suggestions of the Central Government being a “lame duck”.

UN vote on Lanka resolution today
New Delhi, March 20
Top officials today briefed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on key features of the US-sponsored resolution on human rights violations in the island nation. The resolution will be taken up at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva tomorrow.

The crisis-ridden UPA government today got a taste of what is in store for it in the coming days, as it finds itself at the mercy of the Mulayam Singh Yadav-headed Samajwadi Party (SP) and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) after the DMK walked out on it yesterday.

Chandigarh, March 20
Punjab has started taking baby steps to consolidate its fiscal position, with Finance Minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa announcing an increase in value added tax (VAT) rates on cigarettes and soft drinks to mop up additional Rs 180 crore in taxes, while presenting the Budget proposals for 2013-14. However, the Finance Minister has failed to come up with a definite plan to resurrect the sagging economy of the state, whose debt burden is set to cross Rs 1 lakh crore by the end of 2013-14.

Karnataka Assembly poll on May 5
New Delhi, March 20
Karnataka will go to the polls on May 5, Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath announced today. Elections to the 224-member state Assembly will be held in a single phase and counting of votes will be on May 8, the Election Commission said today. The last Assembly elections in the state were held in three phases.

Even without giving any commitment on issuing diplomatic visa to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the British government showed yet another gesture to come close to Gujarat signing an agreement to supply 2.5 million tonnes of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) to the state from 2015.

India successfully tests world’s first underwater supersonic cruise missile
Visakhapatnam, March 20
India today successfully carried out the maiden test-firing of the over 290 km-range submarine-launched version of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in the Bay of Bengal, becoming the first country in the world to have this capability.
