13 children die in Jalandhar mishap
* Head-on collision between school bus and truck
* Nine students hurt; 2 critical
Jalandhar, March 4
Thirteen children were killed and nine injured when a truck collided head-on with their school van on the Jalandhar-Nakodar highway near Nakodar on Monday morning. The condition of two of the injured children is serious. The children from Akal Academy School in Boparai Kalan village in Nakodar were on their way to school when a truck ferrying bricks collided with their mini-bus (Tempo Traveller) near Gohir village.

HCS officer convicted of rape, fraud sacked
Chandigarh, March 4
The Haryana Government has dismissed senior Haryana Civil Services (HCS) officer Jeet Singh Mehra from service on charges of moral turpitude and fraud. Mehra, convicted of rape and forgery by a Panipat court on November 16, 2010, was dismissed from service by invoking provisions of Article 311(2) of the Indian Constitution, which empower the authority to remove a person without holding an inquiry, an order by Haryana Chief Secretary PK Choudhery said.

Raja BhaiyaFacing criticism over the murder of a police officer in Pratapgarh district, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today assured the slain officer’s wife of recommending a CBI probe into the killing. Earlier in the day, controversial Kunda MLA and Uttar Pradesh Minister of Food and Supplies Raghuraj Pratap Singh, alias Raja Bhaiya, resigned from his post after being booked for conspiring to kill Deputy Superintendent of Police Zia-ul-Haq.

A low intensity crude cocktail bomb exploded today outside a Dhaka hotel where President Pranab Mukherjee is staying during a general strike in Bangladesh called by the fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami to protest the conviction of three of its top leaders for 1971 war crimes.

Parliament stalled over petrol price hike
New Delhi, March 4
Two days after the government hiked petrol prices by Rs 1.40 per litre, a vociferous Opposition repeatedly disrupted Parliament today demanding a rollback. The trouble started right at the start of the question hour in both Houses, with the Opposition up on its feet pointing to breach of privilege by the government in announcing the hike in petrol prices outside Parliament when it was in session.
