Finance Minister focuses on welfare schemes, banks on VAT, excise for revenue

Chandigarh, March 1
Haryana Finance Minister HS Chattha arrives to present the Budget on Friday. With an eye on elections next year, Haryana Finance Minister HS Chattha today presented a tax-free budget of Rs 66, 178.49 crore. Even as the state faces a huge revenue and fiscal deficit, it has announced a slew of welfare schemes aimed at inclusive growth of the marginalised sections of the society. Presenting the budget proposals for the coming financial year, the minister said the state’s revenue collections will go up substantially

Shinde rules out govt hand in Jaitley’s 'phone tap'
New Delhi, March 1
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Friday said that the government had no role in the alleged phone tapping of Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, and said it would consider a proposal to prohibit such a practice without the permission of the Chairman of the House.

Delhi again: 7-yr-old raped in school
Protesters clash with police; DTC buses, PCR vehicles damaged

New Delhi, March 1
A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man in a North Delhi Municipal Corporation school at Mangolpuri on the outskirts of Delhi during lunch hours yesterday. The traumatised girl was shown five persons, including a teacher, a watchman and two peons, but she was unable to identify the culprit.

J-K Assembly to discuss return of Afzal Guru’s body
Jammu, March 1
PDP legislators protest in the Assembly before it was adjourned on Friday. Jammu and Kashmir Assembly will debate the issue of return of mortal remains of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru to the Valley and the situation arising out in the wake of his execution. Guru was executed and buried in Tihar Jail on February 9. The issue rocked the House and after repeated disruptions it was ultimately adjourned for the day

Petrol price up Rs 1.40; second hike in fortnight
New Delhi, March 1
Petrol prices have been hiked by Rs 1.40 per litre excluding local sales tax with effect from midnight, the second big increase in rates in a fortnight. The previous petrol price hike was Rs 1.50 a litre excluding VAT on February 16. This amounts to an increase of almost Rs 3 in two weeks.

All higher educational institutions from central and state universities to deemed universities and colleges will now have to seek accreditation under law in the country. In a decision aimed at improving the quality of education in India, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has notified new regulations
