Copter scam looms over budget session
New Delhi, February 17
The VVIP helicopter scandal could not have surfaced at a worse time for the beleaguered United Progressive Alliance Government that is bracing to face the Opposition during the budget session that opens this week. The budget session is always critical for any government as its Parliamentary managers have to exhibit dexterity in handling issues till the Finance Bill gets approved by the Lok Sabha.

Geetika’s mother feared for son’s life
New Delhi, February 17
Ankit, son of Anuradha Sharma who committed suicide on February 15 six months after her daughter Geetika too ended her life at their Ashok Vihar residence, says his mother feared for his life, and that her fears grew further after he received several blank calls.

Bangladesh PM pins hopes on India
Dhaka, February 17
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today hoped that India would take a “liberal view” to resolve the longstanding Teesta river water sharing issue. Hasina made the remarks when visiting External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid called on her here and assured India’s support to further strengthen bilateral cooperation and taking forward the friendly ties. 

In India, one convict sentenced to death every 3 days since 2001
New Delhi, February 17
With countries across the globe increasingly acknowledging the futility of capital punishment as a deterrent to crime, India has been awarding death penalty to one convict every three days since 2001. As many as 1,455 convicts were given death penalty between 2001 and 2011.

Milkha among 5 booked for Golf Club fracas
Chandigarh, February 17
Milkha SinghFormer athlete Milkha Singh along with four others has been booked in connection with Saturday’s brawl at the Chandigarh Golf Club. Milkha and three others, including former Punjab Chief Secretary RS Mann, Congress MLA from Nabha Randeep Singh and former captain of Golf Club SS Laihal, were party to a violent scuffle with Lt Col (retd) Vijay Singh Sandhu, who in turn attacked them with golf clubs and hurled abuses during the scuffle.
