Rajaji's Chilla range reopens to tourists
Haridwar, February 11 The park was temporary closed in the wake of intense heavy rain that damaged the 40-km tourist safari corridor track falling in the Chilla range. A major portion of this world famous tourist-safari track got submerged in water due to heavy rain. As per the records with the Meteorological Department, Pauri had recorded 65mm while Haridwar had received 36mm of rainfall. DB Uniyal, a Chilla range official, said after the rainfall, roads in the park were in bad shape and it was unsafe for tourists to
move around. “We worked on the war foot level as a result of which the gates of Chilla could be opened for tourists today. The tourist inflow is at peak in this season,” said Uniyal. It is pertinent to mention here that rivulets such as Rawassan, Ghasi Ram, Pili and Chilla Rau flow inside the park territory and are on deluge whenever it rains heavily. The Ghasi Ram rivulet even disconnects the Chilla range falling
in Pauri from Haridwar and Rishikesh. Initially, the park authorities had envisaged at least a two-week break but due to the speedily maintenance work as well as good weather conditions, the park gates were opened today. AS Negi, canteen owner at the Chilla range, said today tourists were seen in the park in a large number. |

Over 20,000 persons to get pension benefits
Haridwar, February 11 This was informed by Social Welfare and Transport Minister Surendra Rakesh, while talking to TNS here today. Since assuming charge of the ministry 11 months ago, a new identification drive for beneficiaries who come in the ambit of pension was carried out, and in all the 13 districts of the state, 20,000 new persons had added in this short span of time. To check mass discrepancies and some people availing the benefit without fulfilling the norms, steps have been taken. A number of camps have been organised in various tehsils. Due to this more than 1000 people have been blacklisted who were illegally getting the benefits of pension. “While we are inducting thousands who fall in the purview of pension benefit, we are also ensuring that wrong persons do not get this benefit, for which stringent verification drive is being carried out," said Surendra Rakesh. Similary, on educational scholarships, the minister said that in Haridwar district Rs 1,400 crore had been spent on scholarships for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe students in the past 11months. Efforts are being made to provide scholarship benefit to backward classes in the state as the Central government has been providing Rs 5 crore to every state government for giving scholarships to backward class students in addition to the state’s assistance. The Social Welfare Minister added that supplementary state budget to the tune of Rs 35 crore had been earmarked, with a special backward scheme project having an annual budget fund providing Rs 7,800 to every such student. “Since the creation of a separate Uttarakhand, we had been lagging behind in catering to SC-ST-OBC sections, to which our state government led by Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna is committed. Both budget and it's expenditure is being looked into and penalty will also be levied on the offenders,” remarked Rakesh, who is a Bahujan Samaj Party legislator from Bhagwanpur. The Minister refuted the charge that a gap existed between the plain and hill regions as far as expenditure was concerned. He added that the state ensured overall development of all 13 districts. The results are there for everyone to see in the districts of Pithoragarh, Pauri, Nainital or Udham Singh Nagar and Dehradun. |

Ancient temples being washed with chemicals
Pithoragarh, February 11 “Out of 26 ancient temple complexes under the purview of the Archaeological Department in the region, we have chosen four temples constructed during 14th century. We have already started washing Mundeshwar temple complex near Almora town with chemicals,” said
Dr Chandra Singh Chauhan, research assistant at the regional archeological unit at Almora. According to Chauhan, the temples complexes constructed by Katyuri kings in 14th century are unique symbols of fine stone crafts done in big single stones, but due to negligence, these architecture hubs are out of vision of common man and even the archaeology students. “The temples, whose architectural work has gone dim in sunlight due to use of mud and lime in its decoration, will be given their original shape so that the architecture and crafts prevalent during that era could be visible by tourists,” said Chauhan. According to the department, Rs 6 lakh will be spent on chemical wash of four main temples of Bagnath temple group, Bageshwar, Mundeshwar temple at Pithuni, Naudeval temple at Banthok and Mahdev temple complex at
Someshawar. |
