Valley tense, curfew continues
One killed, 14 wounded as clashes continue after Afzal Guru’s hanging
Srinagar, February 10
Curfew continued without relaxation for the second day today in all 10 district headquarters of the Valley as clashes continued over the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, resulting in death of a youth and injuries to 14 others. One person drowned in Jhelum river near Sumbal in Bandipore district when a group of protesters were being chased away by security forces, local residents alleged.

Omar slams execution, says it will fuel alienation
Srinagar, February 10
— Omar Abdullah, J-K CMAn angry Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday slammed the execution of Parliament attack mastermind Afzal Guru and said this would reinforce a sense of alienation and injustice among generations of youth in the Valley. Omar also said it was a “tragedy” that Guru was not allowed to meet his family before he was hanged and not allowed a "final farewell".

15 Kumbh pilgrims die in Allahabad train station chaos
Lucknow, February 10
At least 15 pilgrims were killed and several others injured in a stampede on a foot overbridge on platform number 6 at the Allahabad railway station when the police reportedly resorted to lathicharge to control the rush of pilgrims returning to catch trains after taking a holy dip at the Sangam on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

Governors’ meet begins today
New Delhi, February 10
President Pranab Mukherjee will preside over the two-day Conference of Governors starting tomorrow, the first such exercise after he assumed office. The conference is expected to focus on issues of security, development and human resource development, especially education.

India proposes water treaty as China goes on damming spree

Water is emerging as a new possible irritant between China and India, which has proposed a bilateral mechanism to deal with it. India is pressing China to have either a water commission or a inter-governmental dialogue or a treaty to deal with water issues between the two countries.

US markets regulator SEC has charged an Indian-origin person of running a fraud investment scheme, wherein Chinese and other investors were allegedly duped of at least $150 million (over Rs 800 crore) in hope of green-card American residency.
