Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was hanged to death in Tihar Jail here on Saturday morning, less than a week after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy plea.

A combination of factors appears to have prompted the Congress-led UPA government to go ahead with the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru this morning even though this case had been pending for several years.

Right from the trial court to the Supreme Court, the judiciary had worked overtime to fast-track the case relating to the terror attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001, belying the public perception that it takes years to dispense justice.

Even as security agencies have been maintaining a close watch at social networking sites after the execution of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru today morning, netizens in the state have resorted to a ‘fierce encounter’ on the Internet to put forth their views on the hanging and its impact on the fragile peace in the Valley.
