SC to examine juvenile law
New Delhi, February 4
The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to look into the constitutional validity of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2000, under which criminals below 18 years of age involved in heinous crimes such as rape and murder cannot be tried by regular criminal courts and jailed. Under the Act, such offenders are tried by juvenile justice boards that send them to correction homes for a maximum period of three years.

Suresh Kalmadi and nine others were today put on trial in a Commonwealth Games-related corruption case by a Delhi court which invoked charges of criminal conspiracy, forgery, cheating and other offences against them entailing life imprisonment as maximum punishment.

New Delhi, February 4
Rohinton Nariman has resigned as Solicitor General amid speculation over differences with Law Minister Ashwani Kumar. The minister wanted Nariman -- the country’s second highest law officer -- to appear in a case pending with the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), but he was not willing, sources said.
