Gang rape: 5 charged with murder
* Fast-track court frames charges against accused
* Trial to begin on February 5
New Delhi, February 2
A fast-track court here today framed charges against five accused in the Delhi gangrape case and put them on trial on various counts, including conspiracy to abduct the 23-year-old girl and sexually assault and murder her. A fresh offence under Section 366 of the Indian Penal Code was added by the court against them for abducting the girl with the intention to compel and force her to “illicit intercourse”. The court, which fixed February 5 for starting trial, also charged them with murder of the paramedic girl under Section 302 of the IPC which entails death penalty.

Omar tweets in support of all-girl Valley rock band
Srinagar, February 2
Omar Abdullah, J-K Chief MinisterJammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today expressed solidarity with the region’s only all-girl rock band, a day after it surfaced that the teenage girls have decided to shut their band after facing online hate buzz. “I hope these talented young girls will not let a handful of morons silence them,” Omar wrote on micro-blogging website Twitter. The Chief Minister said police will examine the “threats” issued against the girls, which has forced them to shut the band and go “underground”.

Tribune celebrates Founder’s Day

Floral tributes were paid to Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia on the 132th Founder’s Day of The Tribune Group of Newspapers today. Justice SS Sodhi, former Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, and President of The Tribune Trust, Lt Gen SS Mehta (retd), a Tribune Trustee, Raj Chengappa, Editor-in-Chief, and Sanjay Hazari, General Manager, led employees of The Tribune, Punjabi Tribune and Dainik Tribune in paying tributes to Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia at The Tribune complex this morning.

Rural job scheme can usher in second green revolution: Sonia
New Delhi, February 2
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi today extolled the virtues of the UPA’s flagship programme Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) at the eighth NREGA Divas. Awards were presented to the best performing panchayats and districts in the country.

Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir at the Army Institute of Law in Mohali on SaturdayIn a departure from the age-old saying that the wheels of justice turn slow, but grind exceedingly fine, Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir today made it clear that the wheels will rotate fast and still do the job effectively in cases of heinous crimes.
